Music

The vision and intent for music at Summerseat Methodist Primary School aligns directly with the Purpose of Study as described in the National Curriculum 2014 and our whole school vision.

We believe music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity and can be a vehicle for personal expression and enables everyone to live life in its fullness. Through a high-quality music education delivered through the online service Charanga, we aim to engage and inspire children to develop a life-long love of music. Music can play an important part in a child’s personal development increasing their self-confidence and giving them a sense of personal achievement through their individual talent and commitment to aspects of music. At Summerseat Methodist Primary, the intention is for all children to experience being involved in a wide range of musical activities through: listening, evaluating, playing, creating, exploring, singing, composing and performing. It is our intention for music lessons to be progressive, appropriately challenging as well as fun and inspiring, engaging the children with music to listen to, songs, lyrics and movement. We aim to give every child a voice. Music is also a reflection of the diverse culture in our society and so the teaching and learning of music enables children to better understand and appreciate the world they live in. Our aim at Summerseat, is to ensure that children are given optimal opportunity to develop an understanding and appreciation of music across a wide variety of styles, traditions and musical genres. We also build in performance opportunities during the year and provide opportunities to learn instruments as part of our curriculum but also the extra-curricular offer.

“Music is the most universal of all the arts. Ask any person in any country what their favourite music is, and they’ll always have an answer. So treasure music and keep it with you always.” (John Suchet, Newscaster)
